O’NEILL, Neb. -- There will be opportunities to dig deeper into a range of topics this year at the O'Neill Health Conference.

Sessions will focus on adults dealing with grief, care related to burn patients, how to recognize and work with challenging personality types, and emergency planning for medically complex children in rural settings.

This year's conference, which again will be at the  O'Neill Community Center, 501 S. Fourth St., will be on Tuesday, June 24. The first conference took place in 2001.

This year's conference begins with registration and breakfast from 7:45 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. The sessions conclude at 3:45 p.m., with the final activity over at 4 p.m. The cost to register before June 21 is $85.

Here are the sessions.

PROJECT AUSTIN – EMERGENCY PLANNING FOR MEDICALLY COMPLEX CHILDREN

Learn about the origins and goals of Project Austin, designed to improve emergency response for medically complex children. This session includes relevant statistics, key elements of emergency medical plans, and a mock 911 call and ER visit to demonstrate real-world application.

HOW TO HELP ADULTS COPE WITH GRIEF

This session covers the stages and signs of grief, including complex grief. Participants will explore physical and emotional reactions, helpful communication strategies, and supportive rituals. Activities include video discussion and a positive emotion exercise for coping.

PRE-BURN CENTER CARE FOR THE BURN PATIENT

Gain practical skills in burn identification and early care. This session covers assessment, transfer criteria, and the role of rural hospitals. Learn effective strategies for managing both transfer and outpatient burn cases.

DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE

Discover how to recognize and work with seven challenging personality types. Learn self-care techniques, de-escalation strategies, and communication tools like “I-statements.” Includes a group discussion on navigating common workplace conflicts.

The day’s activities have been submitted to the Midwest Multistate Division for approval to award 6.0 nursing contact hours. The Midwest Multistate Division is accredited as an approver of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
