NORFOLK, Neb. — Northeast Community College Foundation is honored to be the recipient of the latest Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) Cares grant request in the amount of $3,000, designated for the student food pantry.

The Northeast Food Pantry serves currently enrolled students at Northeast Community College and students attending the UNMC Norfolk campus, providing vital assistance to meet their food needs.

The grant funds will be used to purchase needed food and toiletries to supply the pantry for the students’ use, according to Gina Krysl, director of Student Care Outreach.

“We are incredibly grateful for our relationship with AWG and how much they care about our students,” Krysl said. “This grant donation will help us meet some of the food insecurities our students experience. When students’ basic needs are met, they can focus on academic performance which leads to increased graduation rates and higher-paying jobs, better mental health, and over all well-being.”

Cynthia Puntney, the AWG Administrative Services supervisor of the AWG Nebraska Division Support Center, assisted the Northeast Community College Foundation in submitting this grant request.

AWG is a strong supporter of the Northeast Food Pantry, consistently providing boxed meals, fresh produce, snacks, and more to students in need. According to Krysl, for the academic year 23-24, there were 690 student visits to the food pantry. This was a significant increase compared to years past.
