Examples of Work On-the-Job Training will be provided for the selected candidate to perform the following: Survey Crew duties: •Under immediate supervision employee will work with our survey crew to collect data from the field for use in design of highway plans. • As a member of the survey crew they will perform topography surveys, culvert cross sections, hydraulic surveys, utility surveys and establish project control points. • Construction staking will involve utilizing construction plans to stake right of way, stake culvert pipes, box culverts, slope staking and cross section borrow pits. • Process and visualize survey data into Microstation to build a digital terrain model. • Applicant will be trained in the use of transits, total station, digital level, GPS and required computer software. Inspection Work: •Inspect contractor's work on construction projects including checking grades and elevations and collecting, recording measurements and maintaining automated records. • Observe transportable and stationary scales to weigh contractor's trucks containing materials used in highway construction such as concrete, hay for mulch, asphalt and gravel. Inspect earthwork and removal operations. • Read construction plans to understand dimensions and information shown and apply the information to the inspection of projects. Testing Work: • Perform or assist with standard tests on port/and cement concrete, asphaltic concrete, soil, aggregate and other construction material for conformance to specifications and maintain automated records. • Perform tests such as slump tests, entrained air content tests and volume to measure density and moisture content of soil. Will also be required to operate snow plow during snow events.

Job Requirements

Qualifications / Requirements REQUIREMENTS: : Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license. PREFERRED: Material testing certifications such as ACI, Nuclear Density, or traffic control training from ATTSSA. Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspection. Coursework or training in construction surveying, material testing, or inspection practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment. Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Drivers License. OTHER: Must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's license within 6 months of hire date. Required training and costs associated with obtaining the CDL will be paid for by the Department. Will be required to obtain and maintain various certifications such as concrete field and plant inspection, soil and aggregate, and traffic control. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of: standards and specifications used for various types of projects; instruments, equipment, and material used in surveying, testing, and inspection work; all phases of construction and plant inspection and their relationship to each other; surveying and testing techniques. Skill in: calculating mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry; applying complex construction inspection, surveying, and materials testing techniques; using personal computers/laptops and associated applications software including drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software; using technical engineering equipment and instruments use during assigned projects. Ability to: interact with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public to maintain cooperative work relationships. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours, including weekends, within 30 minutes for snow removal and other highway emergencies.
