NORFOLK, NE – While summer typically slows down at some academic institutions, that is not the case at Northeast Community College.

Once the academic year ends in May, work begins immediately to prepare students who plan to attend the college in the fall through New Student Registration sessions.

Amanda Nipp, vice president of student services at Northeast, said the college saw more students attend the sessions this summer than in any other year since numbers have been tracked.

“We had 1,001 students attend these sessions,” she said. “The previous record high was set in 2016 with 987 students. We have had additional new students register outside of these sessions, but we are definitely getting the majority of our new students off on the right foot this year with the information and tools they need to be successful.”

Nipp credits Northeast’s recruiting and marketing staff for increasing the number of students attending the sessions.

“We’re very proud of their team work and dedication in recruiting new students to Northeast, but also in guiding students through our enrollment processes as they prepare to begin their academic careers with us.”

The number of students who attended New Student Registration sessions the previous two years have also been high, with 940 and 937 students attending in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

At New Student Registration, students not only meet with an advisor to register for classes, but they also receive their student identification card, talk with staff from student accounts and financial aid, meet with residence life representatives, and visit with others regarding student club, activities and leadership opportunities. In addition, vendors from tool companies are also on campus during specific sessions so career and technical education students can make their purchases. A special parent and guest session is held to provide information about the many services available to Northeast students.

Nipp said the number of Northeast faculty and staff involved varies at each event depending upon the number of students who attend, but large events such as this require assistance from departments all across the college to make them successful.

All students enrolling for the first time with Northeast are required to attend a New Student Registration event.

“Northeast wants to provide students with the right information at the right time. We are committed to student success,” Nipp said.

Most of the students will be back on campus on Sunday, August 18, for an all-college orientation session. Classes begin on Monday, August 19.
