KEARNEY, NE – An instructor at Northeast Community College has been recognized by her peers across the state. Business Instructor Angela Shaffer has been named Adviser of the Year by the Nebraska Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL).

Shaffer, who serves as the adviser for the Northeast PBL Chapter, was recognized at the state PBL conference earlier this year.

PBL places an emphasis on helping students transition to the business world. There are approximately 11,000 PBL members on college campuses across the country.

Shaffer was named Adviser of the Year through nominations from other state advisers and Northeast PBL members for her efforts and dedication as a PBL adviser.

One nominator said Shaffer works hard to ensure that her students are successful through the organization.

“She does this by getting them involved and being a big supporter of whatever they want to pursue,” the nominator said. “This has been vital to the success of the chapter, especially when it comes to competitive events.”

Another nomination read, “When I spoke with (Shaffer) at the fall conference, she mentioned that she had picked up several additional classes (to teach). This was on top of her regular work load, and I'm sure she was taking on much more than I could handle. Through it all, my guess is that she continued to be actively involved with PBL. It has been a heck of a year for her.”

Shaffer has seen several PBL students succeed at the state and national level over the past 13 years. Including students who earned 34 awards; which comprised of nine first place and six second place honors, at the state conference, and nine students who earned honors, including several top 10 placements, at the organization’s National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, TX, recently.

“She has truly impacted the lives of many students, not just in her chapter, but also across the state serving as a board member,” according to another nominator.

Shaffer received further recognition at the San Antonio conference.

In addition, a business partner with the Northeast chapter earned state recognition, as well.

Vincent Hoehne, chief financial operator for the New Victorian Hotel Group in Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk, and Sioux City, IA, was named PBL Businessperson of the Year.

Shaffer said Hoehne received the award for the partnership he fostered between the Morning Kiwanis group of Norfolk and PBL.

“Vince and his fellow Kiwanians have created opportunities for PBL members and Kiwanis members to create business mentorships and community involvement,” she said. “We certainly appreciate his involvement with our students.”
