The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) awarded official accreditation to the College’s Health Information Management Systems (HIMS) program this summer.

Prior to its present title, the program was known as medical secretary, medical office technology, and medical administrative assistant.

Accreditation from CAHIIM allows students who have graduated from Northeast’s HIMS program to apply for and take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam, which awards them an associate-level credential in the field.

Lyle Kathol, vice president of educational services, credited Dr. Michele Gill, dean of the health and wellness division, and faculty members, Tina Mazuch and Sarah Fuerhoff, for their work on achieving accreditation status.

“I appreciate the many hours of hard work that they dedicated to developing this premier program to meet the demand over the ever-changing health records field. With a number of cybersecurity and health records standards that are so crucial to current and future workplace needs, this program is vital to the region we serve.”

Northeast HIMS graduates have opportunities for employment in hospitals, clinics, nursing facilities, health insurance companies, and government agencies in both paper-based and computer-based patient record environments. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that job growth in the HIMS field will increase by
13-percent through 2026.
