NORFOLK - A Northeast Community College student has earned a scholarship to study abroad in Spain this summer. Krisayla Rasmussen, Norfolk, has received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Rasmussen says she initially grew interested in traveling and studying abroad when she saw posters around the Northeast Community College campus promoting study abroad educational experiences.

“I know a lot of people say if you have that opportunity, you should take it, so I definitely did,” she said.

This will be Rasmussen’s first experience with international travel. She says the farthest she’s been from her home in Nebraska was a trip to Texas, and most of her other travels have been confined to the Midwest.

A Business Administration major at Northeast who recently completed her freshman year, Rasmussen hopes to pursue a career in market research analysis.

Rasmussen is one of 1,150 American undergraduate students from 377 colleges and universities to receive the Gilman Scholarship. Named for Congressman Benjamin A. Gilman, the scholarship program offers students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of other countries, languages and cultures. The program is administered by the Institute of International Education.
