Wind energy students work on donated equipment

NORFOLK, NE - Norfolk Mayor Josh Moenning (left) and Phillip Clement, project director of renewable development for NextEra Energy Resources, watch Northeast Community College students and their instructors install the rotor hub on a wind turbine nacelle at the College earlier recently.

The nacelle houses all the generating components that sit at the top of a 300-foot commercial wind turbine while the hub connects the blades to the main shaft and ultimately to the rest of the drive train.

Both components, donated to the College by NextEra from a decommissioned turbine from a wind farm in Lake Benton, MN, join a 100 kilowatt Micon 108 wind turbine, a full-size turbine blade and other equipment as part of Northeast’s Wind Energy Technology program.

Moenning serves as director of New Power Nebraska, a coalition that aims to promote the benefits of wind energy in the state.
