Chipps to retire from Northeast May 31; interim leadership to be named

NORFOLK, NE – With the end of the academic year next week at Northeast Community College, members of the Board of Governors believe this is an ideal time to move forward to fill the president’s position.

Dr. Michael Chipps announced this spring that he would retire from the presidency of Northeast Community College on or before December 31, 2019. In the time since the announcement, the board and Chipps have been discussing how to ensure a smooth transition in selecting the next president.

“Dr. Chipps has finalized his plans for his last official day serving as president to be May 31, 2019. We certainly appreciate his desire to move the process forward,” said Steve Anderson, of Concord, board chair. “The goal of the Board of Governors is to recognize and honor Dr. Chipps’ stellar 40-year career in higher education. Conversely, as we are about to close another academic year, it is prudent for us as a board to begin the search for our next president.”

Anderson called Chipps an exemplary leader during his seven years at Northeast.

“He has led this institution to new initiatives, programming and other opportunities that have allowed our students to excel and have a ‘full college experience.’ We will be forever grateful to his dedication, his commitment and his work in solidifying Northeast’s reputation as among the nation’s top rural community colleges.”

Anderson said as the board works to identify the next president, interim leadership will be taking over beginning June 1, and the plan will be considered at the May 9 Board of Governors meeting.

He is confident the Board of Governors will find a new, qualified leader for the college.

“With as much as we have going on, the drive to carry our initiatives forward, the reputation we have earned, and with the faculty and staff we have, Northeast Community College is a most desirable place. With that said, the board will move forward immediately to seek our new president,” he said.

A public reception to celebrate Chipps’ career will be held following the Board of Governors’ next meeting on Thursday, May 9. It will be held from 2-5 p.m. in the Hawks Point Dining Facility on the Norfolk campus. In order to accommodate the reception, the start time for the board’s regular meeting has been moved from 3 p.m. to 1 p.m. on May 9, in the College Welcome Center.
