NORFOLK, NE – Area residents had the opportunity recently to see the latest ideas and visit with professionals on design ideas for their homes and more. The Norfolk Area Home and Garden Show is a popular event that is held each year at the Chuck M. Pohlman Agriculture Complex at Northeast Community College.

Several college students had a hand in this year’s show, sponsored by the Norfolk Area Homebuilders Association.

Students in Northeast’s Media Arts program - broadcasting, audio recording technology and digital cinema and media concentrations – put their lessons in the classroom to work as they produced several videos that were featured on the home builders’ association social media pages.

Brian Anderson, broadcasting instructor, said students were in charge of creating an interview set, complete with lights, camera and audio capabilities.

“Vendors and home show organizers then came to the students for a quick interview session, featuring their product lines or services their businesses provide. The goal of the videos was to drive more traffic through the door for the home show.”

Anderson said students produced 10 videos ranging from two-to-five minutes. In addition, they produced live social media feeds to open the show, which was viewed more than 900 times, while the other produced videos had anywhere from 200 to 700 views each.

To show its appreciation for their work, members of the Norfolk Area Home Builders Association gave a donation that will go into the coffers of their respective program’s student club organizations.

“These funds will help students attend various industry events that allow them to speak with professionals and learn about new trends in the media industry,” Anderson said.

Several Northeast applied technology students also assisted with the home and garden show.

“The building construction students set up the event; helped vendors unload, setup and load; served the lunch; helped collect admissions for the show; maintained the facilities during the show; helped direct traffic and coordinate parking; tore down and cleaned the ag complex at the end of the show,” said Shanelle Grudzinski, associate dean of applied technology. “They also coordinated their club fundraiser by selling raffle tickets for the shed, tools, and other giveaways.”

Grudzinski said the students also assisted canned goods to donate to the Norfolk Food Pantry.

“They were certainly busy over the weekend and tired by Monday afternoon,” she said.”
