WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Michael Chipps, president of Northeast Community College, has been appointed to a commission that will offer guidance on trends and issues impacting the nation’s rural community colleges.
The work of the American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) Commission on Small and Rural Colleges will highlight innovative practices in small and rural colleges that can serve as models for other institutions. The commission will also make suggestions to the association on ways that it may address the needs of the segment of this sector.
“Dr. Walter Bumphus, AACC president and the association’s board of directors, see the value of the nation’s rural community colleges,” Chipps said. “I had the privilege as one of 15 college presidents who were able to meet with USDA research officials to discuss and better understand the conditions of rural America. This work is vitally important to the rural sector of this nation’s economy.”
The commission is one of ten authorized by the AACC Board of Directors. Each commission consists of an average of 24 people from member institutions who are CEOs or administrators.
The American Association of Community Colleges is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges. The association represents nearly 1,200, two-year, associate degree-granting institutions and more than 12 million students.
