NORFOLK, NE – Over 150 high school students from across Nebraska attended an event that gave them a closer look at a number of careers in the medical field.
The students attended a variety of workshops during the annual HOSA-Future Health Professionals Health Science Experience at Northeast Community College. This is the fourth year Northeast has hosted the HOSA event, which gave attendees the opportunity to learn from Northeast faculty and community partner Faith Regional Health Services.
Workshop topics included body composition testing, physical therapist assistant, pharmacy, occupational therapy, nurse aide and others.
Dr. Michele Gill, dean of health and wellness at Northeast, said the College is pleased to partner with HOSA to sponsor this type of event.
“It’s a great opportunity to showcase our teaching faculty and our students to high-achieving high school students who are interested in becoming health care professionals. HOSA provides early exposure with engaging, hands-on experiences. These students are planning to be part of the health care workforce, and it’s a privilege to host them on campus here at Northeast as well as strengthen our partnerships with local health care providers.”
HOSA is a career and technical student organization that is focused on preparing students to be leaders in the health care industry. Students from member colleges and high schools may participate in leadership opportunities, community service, and develop technical and career skills needed for success in the healthcare industry.
Nebraska has over 1,000 HOSA members and ranks fourth in the nation for membership growth.
High schools sending students to the HOSA event at Northeast Community College included Creighton, Douglas County West, Kearney, Midlands Health Science Career Academy, Millard South, Norfolk, North Bend Central, Papillion-La Vista South, Pathways 2 Tomorrow and Scotus Central Catholic.
