JACKSON, NE - Welding students from the Northeast Community College South Sioux City extended campus pose for a photo with Bruce Malcolm (back row, first from left), maintenance manager, during a tour of Siouxland Ethanol in Jackson recently. The tour offered students an opportunity to observe firsthand the piping, connections and heat exchanges used in the production facility while exposing them to the tasks industrial welders may perform in similar facilities.
Malcolm explained the plant’s processes, including preventative maintenance, and answered students’ questions. “Visiting local businesses provides students a rich opportunity to understand the context in which their skills will be used,” said Dr. Cyndi Hanson, executive director of Northeast’s South Sioux City extended campus. The campus offers a nine-month welding diploma program that equips students with the skills and certifications for high-demand, high-wage jobs in the area.
