Media Arts - Broadcasting students earn "Gold" awards

LINCOLN, NE – Northeast Community College media arts - broadcasting students have earned two top honors for their work in television. Dustyn Stortzum was presented “Gold” awards in the collegiate division of the 2018 Nebraska Broadcasters Association Pinnacle Awards contest during the association’s annual convention in Lincoln Wednesday.

Stortzum, of Silver Creek, was recognized with the first place award in television sports story for his report on Northeast Soccer Coach Chad Miller. Stortzum and Noah Wilcox, of Norfolk, were presented a “Gold Award” in the play-by-play in live television sports broadcasting category. Stortzum called the action while Wilcox provided the “color commentary.”

Northeast competed against other two-and-four year NBA member colleges and universities across the state in the contest.

Brian Anderson, media arts instructor, said this is a very esteemed honor for his students and the Northeast program.

I am very proud of our students who continue to shine with their amazing talents. These awards are a true testament to their hard work, determination and desire to succeed at their chosen career. The NBA awards night was a great opportunity for them to network with commercial radio and TV stations across the state, learn about their organizations and also potential employment opportunities.”

Anderson said the Northeast broadcasting program has been an NBA member since 2013.

“This is the first year we have submitted entries to its annual awards competition and we are very pleased with the outcome,” he said. “These awards will be good examples for future students to submit entries and have set the bar for student success."

Stortzum earned national honors earlier this summer with his fellow team members from Northeast during the 54th National Leadership and Skills Conference, sponsored by SkillsUSA, in Louisville, KY. The conference attracted thousands of students and advisors from across the country.

The Northeast team took the first place gold medal in the collegiate Broadcast News Production category. It was the first gold medal earned by any Northeast students at the national SkillsUSA competition.
