NORFOLK, NE – A new trap shoot club at Northeast Community College scored several successes during its first full season of existence.
The club actually began in January 2018 with Mike and Julie Filipi, of Battle Creek, serving as coaches, with Doug McKibbon and Matt McCarthy, instructors at the College, as co-advisors.
“Mike and Julie have been coaches for 4-H shooting sports for several years and they wanted to get a college club running as several of the people who shot for them during high school graduated and then enrolled at Northeast,” said, McKibbon, who has worked with the couple the past five-years.
Twenty-one students participated in the club sport this year. Practices were held at the Pierce shooting range and at the Elkhorn Valley Sportsman’s Club in Norfolk.
McKibbon said team members joined the Midway USAYESS (USA Youth Education in Shooting Sports) League at Grand Island, while 12 members took part in league competitions there this spring.
“We brought home at least one medal every week and more (medals) other weeks,” he said.
Individual results include:
Aaron Volquardsen, Madison, took silver in Trap; Chelsea Fessler, Grafton, earned bronze in Trap; and Devin Rasmussen, Wisner, captured a bronze in Sporting Clays on March 3.
Tanner Knight, Ord, took silver in Skeet and Silver in Sporting Clays, while Volquardsen earned a silver in Trap on March 10.
Fessler earned a silver medal in Handicaps on March 17.
Trevor Dozler, Brainard, took gold in Handicaps on March 24.
Dozler was a silver medalist in Handicaps on April 7.
Mark McKibbon, Norfolk, earned silver in trap and Andrew Anderson, Norfolk, took silver in Sporting Clays on
April 24.
McKibbon said, “It was a fun group to work with this season and we hope to grow the club and league participation during the 2018-19 academic year.”
