Diesel program stays on leading edge of technology

NORFOLK, NE – Students in Northeast Community College’s diesel technology program are using new equipment that will better prepare them upon entering the workforce. The program has added a Bosch EPS 205 High Pressure Common Rail Injection Test Stand to its list of tools to assist students entering the field.

The equipment allows mechanics to test fuel injectors in their shops, rather than having to send them out for off-site testing, which allows for a quick turnaround time in the repair bay.

Instructor Craig Evans said the new equipment can test injectors from a number of manufacturers including Bosch, Delphi, Denso, Caterpillar, and Siemens.

“It uses a Windows operating system to access test information, as well as display test results to the operator,” he said. “The test unit operates at the same high pressure that an engine can produce, with pressures up to 30,000 PSI (pounds per square inch).”

Evans said the test stand is in only a few shops now, but is rapidly expanding to others. He said with the use of this new technology, students will better understand how common rail systems function and how to evaluate the test information for making repairs.

“Our program continues to keep pace with industry standards and technology with new equipment such as the Bosch EPS 205 test stand,” Evans said.

Northeast Community College’s offers two concentrations in its diesel technology program – truck and agriculture. The program instructs students in the basic knowledge and skills needed to service and repair diesel and gas-powered equipment. In addition to classroom study, students receive over 1,000 hours of lab training.
