Chipps honored with Norfolk Chamber’s highest recognition

NORFOLK, NE – The president of Northeast Community College has been recognized for his work in the region. The Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce has presented Dr. Michael Chipps with its highest honor – the Norfolk Oscar.

Chipps was surprised with the award at its 49th annual banquet Thursday night at the DeVent Center.

“The award is presented to an outstanding person or persons who have served Norfolk and have led the community to great accomplishments,” said Scott Williams, who presented the trophy to Chipps with his wife, Lori. The couple received the Norfolk Oscar in 2017.

In a video presentation prior to the award, John Blaylock, executive vice president at Northeast, said Chipps is committed to Northeast and community colleges in general.

“One of the things that Dr. Chipps brings is a passion...a passion for the work, a passion for the students. He always puts the students first. He loves being with the students, sharing a meal with the students, doing all the things that students do in order to make sure they know they are well taken care of. He’s concerned about their success at Northeast Community College.”

Blaylock said Chipps deserves recognition for the vision he has for Northeast.

“When he came to the College (six-years ago), he shared how good we really were, we began to believe in ourselves and we started to see great things happen for our college and for our region. And for that, I believe he is deserving of this award.”

Allen Brenner, president of Northeast Student Leadership Association, said Chipps is, “very personable, very easy going and he’s always willing to talk with the students and is willing to give his time to the students.”

In accepting the award, Chipps said it is a privilege to serve in his role as president of Northeast.

“Leadership is really all about service. It is a humbling experience to able to serve you as president of Northeast Community College. You have created a tremendous place. We have a visionary board of governors and wonderful employees who are dedicated to serve each one of you in a way that is next to none.”
