The students attending learned about various medical careers through a variety of workshops during the annual HOSA-Future Health Professionals Health Science Experience at Northeast Community College. The Health Science Experience is one of four to be held this year in Nebraska. Workshops included topics such as nursing, medical coding, privacy and security, and public health, among others.
HOSA is a career and technical student organization that is focused on preparing students to be leaders in the health care industry. Students from member colleges and high schools may participate in leadership opportunities, community service, and develop technical and career skills needed for success in the healthcare industry.
“As we create our future in health care in our state, we are hoping to build a pipeline of quality of health professionals in all areas in health sciences,” said Megan Leasure, Verdigre, HOSA state vice president, during the day’s opening session. “You are needed in our state as the demand for health professionals continues to grow. As a future health professional, you know your skills will always be in demand as you enter a challenging career with great opportunities for growth and advancement.”
Leasure said the HOSA event in Norfolk would not have been possible without the assistance of Northeast Community College.
“This innovative health care organization has donated many volunteer hours, facilities, equipment and supplies to ensure that we all have a top notch experience today.”
Dr. Michele Gill, dean of health and wellness at Northeast, said the College is pleased to partner with HOSA to sponsor this type of event.
“As our population continues to age, we are going to need these students to do what they need to do to become the next doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians or one of the many health care-related professions that exist. This event is a perfect introduction to what awaits them.”
High schools sending students to the HOSA event at Northeast Community College included Bellevue East, Creighton, Kearney, Midlands Health Science Career Academy, Norfolk, Papillion LaVista, Papillion LaVista South, and Verdigre.
