Northeast women suffer first loss of season

by jamesc  12/5/2017 9:49:12 PM --  NORFOLK, NE – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team started off slow and could not catch the energy of the North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) here Monday, and suffered its first loss of the season, 66-51.

Hawks Coach Matt Svehla said NDSCS brought good energy into the game and played solid defense.

“We did not match them at all in that category, particularly during the first five minutes of the game.  Our ball movement was poor and we looked like we did not want to play basketball.”

Despite a tough first quarter, Northeast battled its way back and had the game within five points with
six-minutes remaining in the game.

“We just couldn’t get any closer and ended up having to foul them down the stretch,” Svehla said. “Our slow start really hurt us; and we need to learn from this. You can’t take a night off when you are playing a competitive team like NDSCS.”

The Hawks were led by Sierra Bell with 12 points, followed by Judit Valls with nine and eight from Baileigh Nuzum. Irene Sanz finished with seven points followed by six points from Mykala Baylor.

Northeast (11-1) will next face the St. Thomas JV in the Iowa Western Community College Classic on Friday at 5 p.m. in Council Bluffs, IA.
