Northeast volleyball falls 3-2 at NJCAA national tournament

CHARLESTON, WV - The Northeast Community College volleyball team’s upset effort fell short yesterday in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament. The #12 Hawks fell to #5 Sauk Valley Community College (IL) in five sets (21-25, 26-24, 26-24, 22-25, 13-15).

“We played a tough match and came up a couple points short,” said Amanda Schultze, Northeast coach. “We committed some errors at crucial times, which ended up hurting us in the fourth set and pushed the match to five sets. We started off great in the fifth set, but Sauk Valley had a very good outside that we struggled to stop.”

Macy Stewart led the Hawks in kills with 19, while Monique Schafer tallied 16 and Taylor Lammers, 11. Samantha Brester had five blocks, while Lammers and Schafer had four each. Peyton Roach, Stewart, Schafer and Lammers had one ace serve each. Schafer led digs with 30; Roach, 28; Stewart, 21. Savannah Nelson dished out 57 assists.

The NJCAA National Tournament continues today, with the Hawks set to face #13 Carl Sandburg College (IL) in a consolation match at 11 a.m. Central Time. The winner of that match will advance to play today at 3:30 p.m. Central Time against the winner of the #16 Harcum College-#8 Central Community College match.
