Bench provides spark in Northeast women's win over Iowa Lakes

NORFOLK, NE - The Northeast Community College women's basketball team is now 4-0 after defeating Iowa Lakes Community on the first day of the Hawks Classic yesterday. Final score was 95-61.

"We shot the ball pretty well tonight, but it took us a while to get going," said Matt Svehla, Hawks coach. "Iowa Lakes really played hard early, and it took us a bit to respond. Our energy was low during the opening minutes, but we picked it up and had a really good second quarter."

Svehla said his team's good depth was on display last night. The bench scored 50 points, and the Hawks' top two scorers came off the bench: Kori Fischer who had 16 points on 6-6 shooting, and Lauren Hunstad, with 13 points on 5-7 shooting.

Overall, Northeast shot 59 percent from the field, and the guards shot 70 percent from the field. Five guards scored in the double digits: Fischer and Hunstad, as well as Baileigh Nuzum and Jerrica Neal with 12 points each, and Sierra Bell with 11.

Earlier at the Hawks Classic, Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) defeated North Platte Community College, 87-66.

The Hawks Classic continues today at the Cox Activities Center on the Norfolk campus. The Northeast women's team will face off against DMACC at 4 p.m. with the Hawks men's game against Iowa Central to follow at 6 p.m.
