Northeast women's soccer picks up 2-1 win against NIACC

NORFOLK, NE - Two goals in the first half gave the Northeast Community College women's soccer team a win over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) here Saturday. Final score was 2-1.

Northeast's Ellie Gess scored in the first five minutes on a ball from Erika Kumm. Twenty minutes later, Cassie Pickrel scored on a long shot that went over the goalie's head to bring the halftime score to 2-0.

In the second half, NIACC received a free kick outside the 18-yard box that led to a goal.

Alexis Wemhoff recorded four saves for the Hawks. Northeast outshot the Trojans seven to five, and both teams had four shots on goal.

"I felt we came out and started pretty well," said Chad Miller, Hawks coach. "We knew they would be aggressive from the start, and I felt our girls dealt with the pressure really well. We made some nice passes and created some really good passing lanes. We seemed to struggle a little bit in the second half trying to find some space, but we kept it together and found ourselves getting good chances."

Miller said he placed some of his players in different positions for this game.

"It may throw us off a little bit, but these girls adapt really well and just want to be successful. They are a great group."

Northeast (10-4-1) will travel to Council Bluffs, IA, on Wednesday to face Iowa Western Community College in a 2 p.m. match.
