Northeast men's soccer beats Scott, falls to Western Nebraska over weekend

NORFOLK - The Northeast Community College men's soccer team went 1-1 over the weekend after defeating Scott Community College on Saturday, 3-1, and falling to Western Nebraska Community College on Sunday, 4-2.

On Saturday, Scott Community College got on the board about 13 minutes into the match, making the halftime score 1-0.

Hawks Coach Chad Miller said his team had to play down a player for part of the first half and second half due to a player being red-carded. About halfway through the second half, Nickolas Gamma put the Hawks on the board with a header from Nickolas Gamma on a pass from Arthur Lopes.

About five minutes later, Tiago da Costa gave Northeast their second goal with another pass from Lopes. Daniel Isaza scored the Hawks' final goal unassisted late in the game.

"Being down a goal and a player, our guys showed a lot of determination," Miller said. "We really controlled the second half and found great opportunities to get forward. Teamwork is what won this game for us."

Massimiliano Simonazzi had five saves for Northeast. The Hawks had nine shots on goal to Scott's six.

On Sunday, Miller said his team had a strong first half with scoring opportunities for both teams. Western scored 31 minutes into the first half, and less than five minutes later, the Hawks replied with a combination play from Cale Frahm on a pass from Daniel Isaza. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.

Within the first minute of the second half, Western scored a second goal, with another to follow 15 minutes later, and a fourth ten minutes after that. Isaza scored for Northeast two minutes later with an assist from Gamma.

"In the second half, we came out on our heels, and they got on us quick," Miller said. "But our boys kept playing even after a couple more scored by Western."

Miller said he had hoped the Hawks could score another goal at the end.

"We didn't get it, but the boys played extremely well, and they should be proud of their performance."

Northeast had five shots on goal to Western's eight. Simonazzi put up four saves for the Hawks.

Northeast (4-6) will host Central Community College on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game at Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk.
