“Bright Horizons has never had a campus advocate, so we’re really excited to bring this service to campus for students, staff and faculty,” Olsen said.
A non-profit organization, Bright Horizons is dedicated to the elimination of domestic violence and sexual assault through empowerment, education, social action and support services. They offer individual advocacy, emergency shelter services, some financial assistance and legal advocacy, which helps individuals through the protection order and court processes. Olsen will bring these same services to the Northeast campus.
A native of Lyons, Olsen is a Northeast Community College alum who graduated in 2015 with an Associate of Arts in behavioral science. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in human service counseling from Wayne State College.
Olsen said that one of the many advantages she brings to Northeast is that she is a non-mandatory reporter.
“That’s a big plus for students because a lot of times, mandatory reporting can be a really big barrier for them seeking help and talking to an advocate. They think that if they were assaulted or if they are being abused in any way, that must be reported, but with me, that is not the case.”
