Northeast golf faces challenges at Blue River Classic

LINCOLN, NE - The Northeast Community College golf team faced a number of challenges at the Blue River Classic held here Tuesday and Wednesday. The Hawks finished 17th at the tournament.

Iowa Western Community College took first place with a two-day team total of 583. Northwestern College finished second with 595, and Morningside College took third with 600.

The Hawks' two-day team total was 676.

Coach Kurt Pytleski said difficult conditions at Wilderness Ridge golf course led to high scoring for all teams.

"Our inexperience kind of showed this tournament. We have one sophomore and the rest freshmen. It was an eye-opener for our younger players. The courses played longer than they were used to playing in high school, and the course setup was demanding. On these types of courses, if you start hitting a few errant shots, your high scores can snowball on you."

The Hawks tallied a 354 team total on day one, where Pytleski said all his golfers shot about ten strokes higher than usual. The Hawks improved to a 322 team total on the second day.

Cabe DeBower led the Hawks with a two-day total of 163 to tie for 62nd. Mason Stubbs fired a 169 over the two days; Brook Klinetobe, 169; Andrew Schnoor, 176; and Capp Bengston, 181.

Brandt Radloff of Iowa Western took medalist honors with a two-day total of 151.

"We are a better team than our scores would indicate," Pytleski said. "I really like this team and know we will improve as the season goes on."

Northeast will play in the Mount Marty Men's Golf Fall Invitational next week in Yankton, SD. The tournament will be held at Hillcrest Country Club on Monday and wrap up on Tuesday at Fox Run Golf Course.
