Poetry, prose, music and visual art will be featured during the third annual Arts Night on Wednesday, May 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m., in Hawks’ Landing in the upper level of the Student Center on the Norfolk campus.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the arts…and what better time is there to do that than with the release of our latest edition of Voices Out of Nowhere,” said Bonnie Johnson Bartee, English instructor and creator of Arts Night.

Voices Out of Nowhere is an anthology that dates back to the 1970s. It is a collection of student art work, creative writing and photography that is published annually by the Northeast Community College English Department under the supervision of Johnson-Bartee. The work are judged by published poets and writers and staff from the Norfolk Arts Center for the publication’s awards.

Johnson-Bartee said Arts Night is an opportunity to bring student authors and artists together in order to display the variety of the talent that can be found at Northeast.

“We put the focus on our students by letting them read and sign their works, and they are also presented with awards. The event showcases the extraordinary creativity of Northeast students.”

The open mic portion of the night allows anyone interested to strum a guitar or perform a musical piece. Students in Creating Stories I and II will also read from their work.

Johnson-Bartee said everyone is welcome to attend Arts Night, which is free and open to the public.

“Come when you can, leave when you need, but we are encouraging everyone to stop by for a bit to enjoy performances, peruse artwork, and meet and greet creative minds. For those who would like to participate, please bring your poetry or prose, your artwork (as well as something to display it), your scripts, and/or your music.”
