Northeast to host health and wellness career camp for high school students

NORFOLK - High school students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare are invited to sign up for an upcoming summer career camp at Northeast Community College in Norfolk. Health and Wellness Summer Career Camp will be held Thursday, June 1, and Friday, June 2, on the Norfolk campus. Camp meets 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Students will learn more about the healthcare industry as they take part in hands-on activities led by instructors, healthcare professionals and Northeast students; ask questions and learn from professionals in various fields; learn the next steps as they plan their careers; and visit one-on-one with Northeast students and faculty about the college application process, admissions requirements and student experience.

Participants will also learn more about the paramedic, health information management systems, nursing, personal training and physical therapy assistant programs offered at Northeast.

Dr. Michele Gill, dean of the Health and Wellness Division at Northeast, said the division developed the camp, now in its second year, to spotlight the many programs it offers.

“This summer experience will be an awesome opportunity to receive ‘one-on-one exploration’ into five health and wellness job areas that could be a career choice for students,” said Gill. “We want this experience to be a springboard for area students to get excited about working in health and wellness.”

Gill notes that camp activities also include a first aid certification course. Each camper, upon successful completion of skills demonstration and a course exam, will leave camp certified in first aid.

The camp is available to students who will be in grades 9 through 12 for the 2017-18 school year. Registration is limited to the first 30 applicants.

Cost of the camp is $25 and includes lunches.
