Northeast ag students place 4th at NACTA Conference

MANHATTAN, KS – Northeast Community College students finished in fourth place in sweepstakes for two-year colleges at the 2017 North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Judging Conference held at Kansas State University here.

Northeast was one of 24 community college and 23 university teams to compete in the April 6-8 conference.

Northeast’s Agribusiness Team placed first in presentation and overall. Team members include Trevin Foltz, Humphrey, Ben Frisch, Lindsay, Kyle Kleinschmit, Wausa, and Justin Lee, Albion.

Individually, Lee placed first, Foltz third and Frisch fourth in the knowledge exam and overall.

The Precision Ag Contest Team placed first in the planting division, second overall in the spraying division, fourth in the harvesting division and fifth in the data interpretation division. Team members include Alex Benorden, Exeter, Jon Meis, Elgin, Kreg Schlautman, West Point, Heath Schroeder, West Point, and Tessa Uhing, Hartington.

Individually, Meis placed first in the spraying division, third in the planting division, and fifth overall.  Schlautman placed fourth in the data interpretation division and fifth in the planting division.

In the crops contest, Northeast placed third in math practical, lab practical, and overall and fourth in identification and agronomic quiz. Team members include Kim Carlson, Pierce, Jacob Krings, Albion, Spencer Olmer, Norfolk, and Blake Reimers, Osmond.

Individually, Krings placed fourth in math practical and fifth overall. Others participating in the crops contest were Travis Gillilan, Wausa, Aiden Kleinschmit, Wausa, Elle Bermel, Randolph, and Andy King, Newman Grove.

In the computer applications contest, Northeast placed third overall. Team members include Jack Brown, Craig, Whitney Kaser, Pender, Stephanie Sorensen, Plainview, and Uhing.

In the knowledge bowl contest, Northeast tied for fifth place overall. Team members include Colin Roeber, Greenwood, Whitney Kaser, Pender, Carlson and Schlautman.

In the livestock management contest, Northeast placed fourth overall. Team members include Andrea Pelster, Ericson, Meis, Roeber and Schroeder.        

In identification and problem solving, the Northeast team placed third. Team members include Meis, Pelster Roeber and Schroeder.

Individually, Schroder was fifth in identification.

In dairy judging, Northeast placed fifth overall. Team members include Emily Hausmann, Spencer, Karly Jensen, Bloomfield, Stephanie Kersten, Gretna, and LaKeisha Wheeler, Butte.

Northeast also competed in the livestock judging contest. Team members include Hausmann, Jensen, Kersten and Wheeler. In addition, Northeast fielded a team in the Soils Contest. Team members include Kyle Mock, Albion, Gillilan, Schlautman and Schroeder.

The students were accompanied by Mike Roeber, Bernie Thyen, Chris Burbach, and Mike Zierke, Northeast agriculture instructors, and Tara Smydra, dean of agriculture, math and sciences.

In addition to participating in the contests, the students toured the Homestead National Park at Beatrice and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, KS.

Northeast Community College will be hosting the 2018 NACTA Judging Conference April 18-21, 2018.
