Fifteen Northeast student-athletes honored by NJCAA

NORFOLK – Fifteen Northeast Community College student-athletes have earned academic honors through the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

The NJCAA has three levels of academic awards it presents to student-athletes - the Pinnacle Award for Academic Achievement (4.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA)), the Superior Academic Achievement Award (3.80-3.99 cumulative GPA) and the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award (3.60-3.79 cumulative GPA).

Three Northeast student-athletes earned the Pinnacle Award - Leah Grovijohn, Dodge, (softball), Preston Peters, Bancroft, (golf) and Bridget Schneider, O’Neill, (volleyball).

Seven student-athletes received the Superior Academic Achievement Award. They include Cynthia Jorge, Canary Islands, Spain, and Kara Valasek, Palmer, (women’s basketball), Taryn Luedtke, Creston, and Whitney Valasek, Palmer, (volleyball) and Michael Brockhaus, Humphrey, Brooks Coleman, Valentine, and Tyler Lewis, Norfolk (golf).

Five student-athletes were presented with the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award - Brooke Bauer, O’Neill, (women’s basketball), Marcus Holmberg, Columbus, (men’s soccer), Alyson Romey, Erie, CO, (softball), Nikki Stolzer (volleyball), Springfield, and Mackenzie Wecker, O’Neill (volleyball).

“I am very proud of these particular student-athletes as they have done a great job of balancing the athletic demands of college with academic performance,” said Northeast Director of Athletics Jake Ripple. “It shows a great commitment to the idea of being a student-athlete. These student-athletes are setting a great example of what Hawk Athletics should be.”
