HASTINGS – Two graduates of Northeast Community College’s Diesel Technology program earned high honors at the 2015 Nebraska SuperTech competition held earlier this year at Central Community College here.

Abe Meyer, Orchard, a May 2002 graduate of Northeast Community College’s Diesel Technology program, placed third overall. He also received the First Time Competitor award, which is presented to the highest overall scorer among first-time participants, and additionally earned Station Winner honors for the Wheel End category. Meyer represented Norfolk Truck Center in the competition.

Evan Peterson, Stromsburg, a May 2015 Northeast Community College Diesel Technology graduate, took the top prize in the student category, earning a $500 tool voucher. He is employed by Columbus Truck Center.

Sponsored by the Nebraska Trucking Association, Nebraska SuperTech is the state’s leading skills contest for professional commercial vehicle technicians. To qualify, 94 entrants took an online test, and the top 16 advanced to the hands-on final rounds, which were hosted by Central Community College in Hastings.

This year’s SuperTech marked the first time a student contest was also held, with a student from four of Nebraska’s community colleges participating; Northeast’s Peterson was among them.

“The SuperTech competition has been held in Nebraska for a few years now, but this year the committee decided to have a student from each (community) college compete doing the same tasks as the techs that have been in the industry for several years,” said Doug McKibbon, Diesel Technology instructor at Northeast.

Northeast Community College’s Diesel Technology concentration teaches students essential skills and knowledge to service and repair diesel-and gas-powered equipment. Students in the program receive over 1,000 hours of lab training, which focuses on diesel fuel systems, engines, refrigeration, power trains, brakes, among others.
