2016-17 Coaches

Head Coach Matt Svehla

Head Coach Matt Svehla Matt Svehla is in his 24th full season as the head women’s basketball coach at Northeast Community College. During Coach Svehla’s tenure, the women’s basketball program has posted a 560-164 record. Northeast Community College no longer plays in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference, but for the 18 years that Svehla’s teams did play in the NCCAC, his teams won 15 of 18 Nebraska Community College Conference Championships. Coach Svehla’s teams have made several appearances in the national rankings that included two national tourney appearances in 2013 and 2016. The team finished the 2016-17 season with a 27-4 record and have posted an impressive 134-24 record during the past five seasons. Svehla believes in playing up-tempo basketball, but he always places an emphasis on execution, fundamentals, and defense.

Svehla has had good success in recruiting Nebraska talent, but he also attracts student-athletes from throughout the United States and from around the world. The talent that he recruits is a big reason for the program’s successes, but he places great value on the character and attitude that his teams exemplify. He believes coachable talent that plays hard and plays together is a formula for success. Team members have also reaped the benefits of this success, as many of his players have gone on to play at the next level, from NAIA to NCAA Division I universities.

A native of Clarkson, NE, Coach Svehla earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his master’s degree from Wayne State College. Svehla also played for the Nebraska Huskers men’s basketball team from 1987-1989. He and his wife, Carol, have two sons, Sedrick and Jamison.
