ACCUPLACER – English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Test

The ACCUPLACER ESL is administered to non-native English speakers to demonstrate English proficiency.

Who should take the ACCUPLACER ESL test?

All students enrolling at Northeast whose primary language is not English are required to take the ACCUPLACER ESL placement test.

When is the ACCUPLACER ESL administered?

The ACCUPLACER ESL is administered on a daily basis. The ACCUPLACER ESL test will begin three hours before the testing center closes for the day. Call the Testing Center at 402-844-7281 or 402-844-7708; email testing@northeast.edu; or stop by the Testing Center in the College Welcome Center Room 1252 or Room 1256 to schedule a date and time to test. Testing arrangements should be made in advance of starting your program/major.

Is the ACCUPLACER ESL timed?

The ACCUPLACER ESL is a comprehensive computer-adaptive test. The time required to complete the test varies according to individual’s needs and abilities.

Is it possible to fail the assessment?

The ACCUPLACER ESL is not a pass/fail test. The scores will identify the student’s strengths and needs to place the student in the appropriate ESL courses.

Which skill areas does ACUPLACER ESL evaluate?

ACCUPLACER ESL evaluates skills in the following areas: listening, reading and writing. The following is a list of skills that may be included in each test subject:

ESL Listening

The Listening ESL test measures the ability to listen to and understand one or more people speaking in English.

ESL Reading

The Reading ESL test assesses a student’s ability to read English.

  • Literal Comprehension
  • Inferential

Half of the test contains comprehension items: paraphrasing, locating information, vocabulary, and pronoun reference. The other half the reading test assess inference skills: Main idea, fact versus opinion, cause/effect logic, identifying irrelevant information, and author’s point of view.

ESL Essay (WritePlacer ESL)

The WritePlacer ESL test provides a measure of the student’s writing skills.

What should the student bring?

The student must bring a current photo ID. Acceptable forms of photo identification include:

  • Current student ID
  • Current driver’s license
  • State approved ID
  • Current state or federal ID card
  • Current passport or passport card
  • Tribal ID card
  • Naturalization card

Scores are good for 5 years.

The student may take the ACCUPLACER ESL test twice during a semester. Retest fee is $10.00.

How much does it cost?

The ACCUPLACER is provided free of charge for any student who has applied for admission to Northeast Community College. If the student is planning to attend another college or institution or needs to schedule a Remote ACCUPLACER, Northeast Community College will assess a $25.00 fee.
