Northeast softball goes 1-3 in weekend road games

FORT DODGE, IA - The Northeast Community College softball team ended the weekend 1-3 after doubleheaders against Iowa Central Community College here on Sunday and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, IA, on Saturday. The Hawks fell to the Iowa Central Tritons 9-1 and 12-2, and split a doubleheader with Ellsworth, winning the first game 8-0 and dropping the second, 11-4.

In the Hawks’ first game against Iowa Central, Emily Sherstone was 1-for-3. Savannah Robertson went 1-for-3 with a double, and Alayna Allen was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Allen (7-9) was the losing pitcher, with seven hits, four strikeouts and four walks in three innings pitched.

In the second game against the Tritons, Shyanne Sutton finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Sherstone was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Teanne Edens (2-6) took the loss with six runs, six hits, two strikeouts and one walk in 2.2 innings.

The Hawks saw better results on Saturday, when they faced Ellsworth Community College.

“There were big games for us,” said Iris Woodhead, Northeast coach. “What a great, strong effort we had in game one. The hitters looked good, and Alayna Allen was great on the mound. In game two we were on the same pace, but we let the momentum get away from us. Our approach changed at the plate, and instead of looking to take the pitcher deep in the count, we started swinging at bad pitches. We gave Ellsworth the inside corner of the track, and they took it and beat us.”

In the Hawks’ game one win, Edens went 1-for-4 with a run, a double and three RBIs. Allen was 1-for-5 with two RBIs, while Sutton went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Allen had the win with two hits, 13 strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.

The game two loss saw Tera Paczosa finishing 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Chandler Hehnke was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Edens had the loss, with five runs, three hits, four strikeouts and two walks in three innings.

The Hawks’ (18-30 overall, 4-18 in conference) game against Morningside University JV, scheduled for Monday in Norfolk, has been canceled. Northeast will next face Iowa Lakes Community College on Tuesday in Estherville, IA. Start times for the conference doubleheader are 2 and 4 p.m.
