NORFOLK, NE – A number of students at Northeast Community College have been recognized for their achievements over the past academic year.
“I am pleased to honor and congratulate our outstanding Northeast students,” said Dr. Michael Chipps, president, during a ceremony held recently in the Lifelong Learning Center.
The Student Achievement Awards ceremony allows the College to recognize the accomplishments students have achieved academically, through student club or co-curricular organization involvement, and athletics during the 2017-18 academic year.
Chipps said it is an excellent opportunity to celebrate with the students and give them the recognition that they deserve. He said that countless Northeast students have performed exceptionally, many of whom are earning national recognition for their skills and abilities.
“The top goal in Northeast’s Vision 2020 strategic plan is all about student success. All of you epitomize the definition of success, in and out of the classroom. We are very proud of your achievements and for representing Northeast in such an exemplary fashion.”

Academics
Nebraska Intercollegiate Band
Connor Lemke-Elznic, of Winside, percussion, and Seth Rivest, of Battle Creek, tuba, were selected to participate in the annual Nebraska Intercollegiate Band. The group, made up of approximately 90 outstanding instrumentalists from colleges and universities across Nebraska, performed at Kimball Recital Hall in Lincoln during the annual Nebraska State Bandmasters Association State Convention.
Robotics
Northeast’s “KylEd” robotics team, Calvin Craig, of Norfolk, Eduardo Guzman, of Madison, Kyle Lentz, of Hartington, and Kody Salak, of Columbus, qualified for the 2018 VEXU Robotics World Championship at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY. This is the first time a team from Northeast has qualified for the competition, which featured over 90 teams from eleven countries
on five continents.
Phi Beta Lambda (PBL)
Several business administration students qualified for Phi Beta Lambda’s (PBL) National Leadership Conference in Baltimore in June.
Shanae Baker, of Petersburg, is a national qualifier after placing second in four events including Community Service Project, Business Presentation, Management Analysis and Decision Making and Social Media Campaign. She will compete in Business Presentation and Community Service Project.
Hunter Bergman, of Neligh, is a national qualifier with a second place finish in Community Service Project and Social Media Campaign. He was also nominated as the Nebraska State PBL Vice President of Technology.
Christopher Ellenberger, of Osmond, is a national qualifier with a third-place finish in Cyber Security
Shawn French, of Norfolk, is a national qualifier with a second place finish in Cyber Security, third-place finish in Networking Concepts, and fourth place in Computer Concepts
Holden Gabel, of Osceola, is a national qualifier with a seventh place finish in Computer Concepts
Zaine Gallagher, of Norfolk, is a national qualifier with a second place finish in Social Media Campaign and fourth place in Statistical Analysis
Shayla Kramer, of Norfolk, is a national qualifier with a second place finish in Community Service Project and Business Presentation
Jack Tyson, of Carroll, is a national qualifier with a third place finish in Business Ethics and fourth place in Accounting Principles
Jesse Wiseman, of Norfolk, is a national qualifier with a first place finish in Networking Concepts, first place in Cyber Security, and second place in Computer Concepts
Chelsea Wortmann, of Crofton, is a national qualifier with a second place finish in Business Presentation and third place in Business Ethics
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-State Academic Team
The all-state academic team is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) – an international honor society for two-year colleges and the Nebraska Community College Association, to honor students for academic achievement, leadership and community service.
Northeast Community College PTK All-State Academic Team members include Allan Brenner, of Cuiaba, Brazil; Melissa Cruz Saldana, of Sioux City, IA; Domingo Franco, of South Sioux City; Walker Wolff, of Cody; and Chelsea Wortmann, of Crofton.
SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that partners students, instructors and industry to work together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It serves middle school, high school and college students in programs preparing them for technical, skilled and service careers. Several Northeast students qualified for the National Skills USA Contest in Louisville, KY, this summer after earning gold medals at the Nebraska SkillsUSA competition this spring.

Student Activities Council (SAC)
Danielle Gilliland, of Wakefield, secretary of Student Activities Council, was named Student Programmer of the Year for the Midwest Region by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA). With the distinction, she also qualified for APCA national competition.
Athletics
Archery
Kaci Millikan, of Bloomfield, placed first in the Women’s Bow Hunter Division at the U.S. Collegiate Archery Association (USCAA) North Regional Tournament in Yankton, SD, and placed sixth overall to qualify for nationals. She went on to place second in Women’s Bow Hunter Division at the USCAA National Tournament in Las Vegas.

Steve Wooten, of Madison, WI, was named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) 2017-18 Division I All-Conference Second Team.
Melkisedek Moreaux, of Hamburg, Germany. Moreaux was named to the ICCAC’s Division I All-Conference Honorable Mention Team.
Women’s Basketball
Mykala Baylor, of Gary, IN. Baylor received National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)

The Northeast volleyball team qualified for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Charleston, WV, for the second consecutive year. Team members include Gabriela Barbosa, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Delaney Belt, of Shelby, Samantha Brester, of Howells, Tayler Klassen, of Hampton, Taylor Lammers, of Hartington, Savannah Nelson, of Wakefield, Shelby Poprocki, of Clarkson, Peyton Roach, of Wayne, Monique Schafer, of Stuart, Elizabeth Selting, of Elgin, and Macy Stewart, of Shelby.
Chipps told the student honorees that they all possess outstanding skills and abilities.
“You bring those skills and abilities with you into your classes and on the court or field. You use those skills to strengthen your relationships and experiences while attending Northeast, which helps to build a more vibrant student life and community. We are thankful and proud of you represent Northeast Community College.
