Northeast softball comes up short in weekend home games

NORFOLK, NE - The Northeast Community College softball team finished their weekend home games 0-4. On Saturday, the Hawks fells to Iowa Central Community College, 4-2 and 8-6. On Sunday, North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) defeated Northeast 5-3 and 12-9.

“We are playing with a limited lineup, and it shows for us on offense,” said Iris Woodhead, Hawks coach. “We are getting runners on base but are just not able to push them across. One to nine, we need to be tough in our lineup, and we are just not right now. We are competing but are missing the extra work ethic to win.”

“We score runs early in the game, then think our job is done until the seventh inning when we try to push some more across. Not many teams win that way.”

In the Hawks’ first Saturday game against Iowa Central, Savannah Robertson was 3-for-3 with a run and one RBI. Alayna Allen (5-7) had the loss with four runs, four hits, five strikeouts, two walks and four hits by pitch in seven innings.

Game two saw Teanne Edens finishing 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Allen went 2-for-4 with a run, two doubles and an RBI. Edens (1-3) had the loss with six runs, eight hits, two strikeouts and three walks in four innings. Moriah Payton pitched three innings, totaling two runs, three hits, two strikeouts and two walks.

In the Hawks’ first loss to NIACC on Sunday, Edens went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs, a double and one RBI. Rosario Garcia finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Allen (5-8) had the loss with five runs, six hits, seven strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.

In the Northeast-NIACC nightcap, Emily Sherstone went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI. Inese Uribe was 2-for-4 with a run and one double. Shyanne Sutton scored a home run. Edens (1-4) took the loss with 11 runs, nine hits, two strikeouts and three walks in three innings pitched. Payton pitched four innings, allowing one run, three hits and two walks and totaling five strikeouts and one hit by pitch.

Northeast (15-27 overall, 3-15 in region) will travel to Seward on Tuesday to face Concordia University JV at 3 and 5 p.m.
