Northeast softball struggles against NIACC, Kirkwood

BOONE, IA - The Northeast Community College softball team came up short against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) here Wednesday, falling to the Trojans 9-8 in the first game and 10-2 in the second. On Tuesday, the Hawks fell to #2 Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA, 9-1 and 4-1.

Kirkwood is currently ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll.

“We played the number two team in the nation tough,” said Iris Woodhead, Hawks coach. “Each game came down to a few missed pitches.”

Tuesday’s first game saw Kirkwood getting a grand slam in the fifth inning.

Savannah Robertson went 2-for-3 for the Hawks in the first game with a run, while Alayna Allen was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Chandler Hehnke (3-10) took the loss, allowing three runs, two hits and five walks in two innings. Teanne Edens allowed seven hits, six runs and three walks in 3.1 innings.

In game two, Allen gave up only three hits, but Kirkwood sent them all over the fence.

Emily Sherstone went 1-for-3 in game two with a run; Edens, 1-for-3 with an RBI; Jade long, 1-for-1 with two runs, two RBIs and three walks. Allen took the loss with three strikeouts, two walks and three hits in six innings.

On Wednesday, the Hawks struggled against NIACC. Woodhead said her team was unable to close out the first game, giving up two runs in the seventh inning when the Hawks held an 8-6 lead.

In game one against NIACC, Robertson went 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple, a home run and an RBI. Edens was 2-for-4 with two runs; Shyanne Sutton, 2-for-4 with a run and one RBI; Mariah Jensen, 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Allen (5-5) took the loss with nine runs, nine hits, six strikeouts and eight walks in seven innings.

In game two, Long and Hehnke both collected doubles. Moriah Payton (2-10) had the loss in two innings with five runs, six hits and one walk allowed, plus five earned runs. Edens pitched 2.1 innings with five runs, five hit, two strikeouts, two walks and one earned run.

“We have certain expectation that should be met daily,” Woodhead said. “We failed at those Wednesday. We will work on them at practice tomorrow and look to be ready for our big match up against Kirkwood.”

The Hawks (14-20 overall, 3-9 in conference) are set to face Kirkwood again in a region matchup on Friday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk. Game times for the doubleheader are 12 and 2 p.m.
