Northeast softball swept by #2 DMACC in conference opener

BOONE, IA - The Northeast Community College softball team opened conference play here yesterday, falling to Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) 11-0 in the first game and 11-2 in the second.

DMACC is currently ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II poll.

Coach Iris Woodhead said the Hawks faced a tough DMACC team.

"There is a reason they are ranked so high in the nation. Game one we faced one of the best pitchers in the nation and arguably the best in our conference."

DMACC pitched a no-hitter in the first game. Northeast's Chandler Hehnke (2-7) took the loss with 11 runs allowed, four earned runs allowed, eight hits allowed, one strikeout and one walk.

Woodhead said the Hawks were able to settle down and compete in game two until the fifth inning when they gave up seven runs.

In the second game, Savannah Robertson went 1-for-3 with a run. Alayna Allen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and was also the losing pitcher (3-2), with seven runs allowed, two earned runs allowed, three strikeouts and eight hits allowed.

"Big time games mean we need to make big time pressure plays," Woodhead said. "DMACC is a tough conference opener for anyone, and I'm honestly happy we opened with them. Now we know we can compete with anyone. We just need to put complete games together."

The Hawks (11-13) will continue conference play on Wednesday when they host Iowa Lakes Community College at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk. Game times in the doubleheader are 2 and 4 p.m.
