Northeast golf begins spring season this weekend

NORFOLK, NE - Northeast Community College Golf Coach Kurt Pytleski said that after a long winter, his team is ready to get outside and start playing “real golf.” The Hawks open their spring season on Sunday, March 18, when they compete in the three-day University of Nebraska at Kearney Men’s Spring Invite at Awarii Dunes in Axtell.

“My players are ready to start playing real golf instead of hitting balls into the simulator and working out,” Pytleski said. “Winters get a little long sometimes for the guys, and they are chomping at the bit to get outside and start playing. Most of the guys have been working hard this winter to stay in shape and improve their golf game.”

One sophomore and six freshmen comprise the team this year. The returning sophomore is Brook Klinetobe, Stanton.

Klinetobe was the 2016 Class C State Champion in high school and was one stroke off from qualifying for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II national tournament last spring.

“Brook just missed out on going to nationals last year, and I think it has lit a fire under him to get there this year,” Pytleski said. “He is working hard to improve his game and get to that next level of college golf.”

Freshmen players include Capp Bengston, Hartington, Cabe DeBower, Columbus, Dylan Lilienthal, Lincoln, Andrew Schnoor, Randolph, Kelby Schommer, Hartington, and Mason Stubbs, Randolph.

“I really like the players we have, the effort they are putting in, and their potential,” Pytleski said. “We have a number of players who had success in high school golf and the Nebraska summer junior tournaments, so hopefully that translates into our college team’s performance.”

Northeast finished 13th at the Nebraska Intercollegiate Golf Tournament last fall. Stubbs led the Hawks with an 81 (+9).

“Our freshmen all have the potential to do well at the college level,” Pytleski said. “We should be very competitive this spring, as we have some very talented freshmen who have shown tremendous improvement over the winter. This should be a fun spring for the guys, and we look forward to a successful season.”
