Northeast softball drops two against Iowa Western

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA - The Northeast Community College softball team dropped two games against Iowa Western Community College here Friday. The Reivers defeated the Hawks 9-1 in the first game and 8-0 in the second.

The Hawks competitively faced a tough Iowa Western team for three innings but lost energy in the fourth, when walks and base hits led to six runs for the Reivers.

"It's tough to come back after a six-run inning," said Iris Woodhead, Hawks coach. "We need to do a better job at finishing and coming off the bench. We continue to struggle to rise up when things don't go our way."

Savannah Robertson batted 2-for-3, while Jade Long went 1-for-3, and Alayna Allen, 1-for-2. Allen also had an RBI and one base-on-ball. Chandler Hehnke (0-2) took the loss.

In the second game, the Hawks gave up four runs in the first inning off of two hits.

"We gave way too many hitters a free pass, and Iowa Western capitalized on that," said Woodhead. "At the plate, we should be tough, but collectively we are not tough. We need better team at-bats. This will lead to the runs we should be scoring."

Allen went 2-for-2 in game two, while Moriah Payton (1-1) had the loss.

"It’s early in our season still," said Woodhead. "Once we settle and the nervous energy subsides, we should be tough at the plate. We still have a lot to learn yet.”

The Hawks (1-3) face Jefferson College and Neosho Community College in Chanute, KS, today. On Monday, they will face Friends University JV at 2 and 4 p.m. in Wichita, KS.
