Northeast softball opens season, splits with Southeast

BEATRICE, NE - The Northeast Community College softball team opened their spring season in Beatrice yesterday, splitting a doubleheader with Southeast Community College. The Hawks won the first game 8-4 and dropped the nightcap, 8-0.

“We came out ready to play in game one, and it was great to see our energy,” said Iris Woodhead, Northeast coach. “We got a little complacent in the fifth and sixth innings, but we were able to keep our composure when Southeast pressured us, and we were able to take advantage of their mistakes on the bases to get us out of a tough inning. We swung the bat well, stringing hits together.”

Northeast outhit the Storm 8-7. Savannah Robertson went 3-for-4 with a run, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Mariah Jenson went 2-for-2 with two runs, a base-on-ball and a stolen base. Tera Paczosa was 1-for-3 with a run and three RBIS, and also earned the save. Moriah Payton (1-0) picked up the win.

The Hawks struggled in the second game, with the Storm outhitting the Hawks 8-5.

Of the five innings played, the Hawks got their leadoff hitter on three.

“The odds are in our favor to score runs when the inning leadoff gets on,” Woodhead said. “However, we struggled hard. The umpire had a small strike zone, but we repeatedly swung at balls outside of his zone, while Southeast waited until our pitchers had to plate balls.”

Robertson went 3-for-3 with a double. Alayna Allen and Paczosa both went 1-for-2. Chandler Hehnke (0-1) took the loss.

“We had great fight, but it wasn’t an intelligent fight,” Woodhead said. “It was a good learning experience for our first games of the season.”

The Hawks (1-1) are back in action today when they travel to Council Bluffs, IA, to face Iowa Western Community College in a doubleheader set to begin at 1:45 p.m.
