Hawks defeat Tigers in Region XI first round game

MARSHALLTOWN, IA – The Northeast Community College men’s basketball team opened postseason play on Monday with a 79-67 win over Marshalltown Community College in a first round National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI play-in game in Marshalltown, IA.

The Hawks shot the ball well from behind the arc in the first half, netting four of six, three point shots. Northeast shot 51-percent from the field for the game and held the Tigers to 67 points overall.

Steve Wooten led the way with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Jaquan Sanders added 19 points and six assists for the Hawks while Julius Sakinis added nine points of his own in the win.

Northeast (15-16) will now travel to Ottumwa, IA, on Wednesday to face #1 Indian Hills Community College (30-0). Tip-off is at 7 p.m. The winner of the game advances to Saturday’s Region XI Championship game to face of the winner of Wednesday’s other semi-final game, #2 Iowa Western (24-6) and #3 Southeastern Community College (22-8).
