Northeast students earn campus promotion honors

CHICAGO – Members of the Student Activities Council (SAC) and the Student Leadership Association (SLA) at Northeast Community College have been recognized for their promotion activities across the college over the past year.

Nine members of the groups, and Amanda Kampschneider, business and economics instructor and co-advisor for SLA, attended the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) Conference here recently. Approximately 35 colleges and universities participated in the regional event.

At the conference, Northeast’s SAC Escape Room won for Program Event of the Year for the Midwest Region and now qualifies for higher recognition at the APCA National Conference in Orlando, FL, in February. An Escape Room is a physical adventure game in which players are ‘locked’ in a room and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles to escape within a set time limit. Escape rooms make great team building opportunities, as they rely on communication, leadership, and critical thinking.

Also at the conference, Danielle Gilliland, Wakefield, secretary of SAC, won for Student Programmer of the Year for the Midwest Region and also qualifies for national honors. This is the third consecutive year a Northeast student has won this regional award.

In addition, the 5-in-1 car tool that SAC gave away at its annual Sober in October event, won first place in the Novelty competition. The tool is a torch light, LED light, seatbelt cutter, window smasher, and digital tire pressure gauge. Sober in October is designed to show the dangers of drinking and driving and binge drinking.

Northeast students attending the conference included Allen Brenner, SLA president, Cuiaba, Brazil; Mika Bromwich, Valentine; Jadin Doerr, Plainview; Deavan Gehm, Pierce; Danielle Gilliland, Wakefield; Logan Mattan, Falls City; Kelsey McCaig, Blair; Tim Mendlik, Stanton; and Tia Smith, Neligh.

Carissa Kollath is director of student activities at Northeast.

APCA seeks to promote campus engagement through quality educational experiences, affordable entertainment and community service initiatives.
