Strong third quarter propels Hawks past North Platte, 75-52

NORTH PLATTE, NE - A strong third quarter gave the Northeast Community College women's basketball team a decisive win over North Platte Community College here last night. The Hawks defeated the Lady Knights, 75-52.

The Hawks outscored North Platte 20-10 in the first quarter, but struggled in the second, scoring 19 points to North Platte's 20.

"We had a decent first quarter, but we didn't build on it in the second because we didn't defend very well," said Matt Svehla, Hawks coach. "We were much more focused and disciplined in the third quarter, where we outscored them 21-6."

Northeast saw a strong, 43-point production from their bench last night as well, including the game's top three scorers: Irene Sanz with 14, and Lauren Hunstad and Judit Valls with 12 each.

"Those three did a nice job of scoring for us tonight," Svehla said.

Mykala Baylor led Northeast in rebounds with eight.

The Lady Knights were led by Peighton Porter with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hawks (7-0) will host Southeast Community College on Tuesday at the Cox Activities Center on the Norfolk campus. Game time is 5 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 7 p.m.
