Northeast volleyball ends season at NJCAA national tournament

CHARLESTON, WV - The Northeast Community College volleyball ended its season here Friday at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament. The #12 Hawks defeated #13 Carl Sandburg College (IL) (28-25, 25-20, 25-19) in their first consolation match and advanced to face #8 Central Community College. The Hawks fell to Central in five sets (25-21, 17-25, 17-20, 25-15, 8-15).

In the Carl Sandburg match, Macy Stewart led kills with 14, while Monique Schafer had 11 and Taylor Lammers, 10. Savannah Nelson chipped in one block, two ace serves and 37 assists. Samantha Brester had two blocks. Stewart led digs with 22, while Schafer had 15, and Gabriela Barbosa, 13.

In the Hawks' match against Central, Schafer led kills with 19, while Stewart and Lammers had 11 each. Brester had seven blocks, while Nelson and Schafer had two each. Nelson, Lammers and Peyton Roach each had one ace serve. Roach also tallied 37 digs, while Schafer had 33; Stewart, 24; Nelson, 19; Barbosa, 17. Nelson dished out 47 assists.

"We played some great volleyball today," said Amanda Schultze. "The girls worked very hard and were very strong offensively in our first match against Carl Sandburg. Our second match against Central didn't go as planned, but the girls put up a great fight. Defensively, we were very strong at the net, and we played some great back-row defense as well."

"I am very proud of these girls, as they played some great volleyball the last few weeks and definitely these last couple of days."

Northeast ends their season 19-16.
