Northeast to honor military veterans with Veterans Day observance; displays

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College is commemorating the efforts and sacrifices of current and past members of the armed forces in November. The College’s Student Veterans Organization (SVO) will sponsor a Veterans Day program on Friday, November 10, at 11 a.m., in the Cox Activities Center Theatre on the Northeast campus here. The program is free and open to the public.

This year’s program will also include a keynote address by Dennis Larson of Norfolk, a longtime member of the American Legion. A “Wall of Honor” video tribute featuring photos of current and previous military service members will also be included in the program.

In addition, the SVO has created a military uniform display in the College Welcome Center through November 10th. The display includes uniforms worn by current military students, awards and memorabilia they have earned, and photos and biographies of these students.

“Our students have prepared this display using gear they have worn,” said Karen Hoefler, assistant registrar at Northeast. “They have done an amazing job dressing the mannequins and allowing us to display their hard earned awards.”

The Student Veterans Organization also has another display, “The POW/MIA Table” – a place setting to honor their fallen comrades. The table is located in the atrium of the College Welcome Center.

Hoefler said military supporters are encouraged to visit the Starbucks coffee kiosk in the College Welcome Center to pick up a free yellow lapel ribbon to show support of military servicemen and women.

“A military combat boot will be located on the Starbucks counter to accept free-will donations to the Northeast Student Veteran Organization. Funds will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for veterans and families in need.”

In addition, the Northeast Counseling Office and the Northeast Nebraska Suicide Prevention Coalition will screen the documentary film, Almost Sunrise. It will be shown on Tuesday, November 14, at 7 p.m., in the Cox Activities Center Theatre.

Almost Sunrise is a feature-length documentary that follows two Iraq veterans, Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson, as they struggle with depression upon returning home from military service. Fearful of succumbing to the epidemic of veteran suicide, they both seek a lifeline and embark on a 2,700-mile walk across America as a way to confront their inner pain.  The film captures an intimate portrait of two friends suffering from the unseen wounds of war as they discover an unlikely treatment: the restorative power of silence and meditation.

The screening is free and open to the public.
