NORFOLK, NE – Several area high school juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to come together to be motivated and learn more about higher education opportunities later this month. Northeast Community College will host a Latino Youth Summit on Friday, September 22, from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m., on its Norfolk campus.

Students from three area high schools, Madison, Norfolk and Wakefield, are scheduled to attend the event, which is sponsored by the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD).

“The day is designed to bring Latino students together to learn from Latino leaders in the area, explore what Northeast has to offer and tour campus,” said Yesenia Peck, diversity and inclusion manager at NPPD. “The students will also hear from three dynamic speakers who will share insights on the advantages the students will face in their lives if they pursue higher education. We want the students to think beyond high school and focus on how they can become successful leaders and professionals.”

Speakers during the summit will include Ruben Cano, principal of South High School in Omaha; Juan Cangas, a motivational speaker and talent advisor with the Avenue Scholars Foundation; and Alberto “Beto” Gonzalez, a gang intervention specialist with the Omaha Police Department.

The day will conclude with a professional panel discussion.

This is the second year for NPPD’s Latino Youth Summit. Over 100 students attended a similar event last year in Columbus.
