#15 Northeast volleyball opens season with win over North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, NE - After struggling in the first two sets, the Northeast Community College volleyball team defeated North Platte Community College here last night in a 3-1 victory (26-24, 16-25, 25-18, 25-12) to kick off the new season.

The Hawks are currently ranked 15th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll.

Elizabeth Selting led Northeast in kills with 12, while Macy Stewart and Monique Schafer had 10 and nine, respectively. Taylor Lammers put up two solo blocks and one assist block, while Samantha Brester had one solo block.

Ace serves were led by Schafer with three; Selting, two; and Savannah Nelson, one. Peyton Roach recorded 17 digs, while Schafer had 16 and Stewart, 14. Nelson led assists with 34, while Schafer and Roach had four each.

“We looked a little rusty at times tonight,” said Amanda Schultze, Northeast coach. “We struggled passing in the first couple sets, and we were out of system a lot. Once we started passing, we were able to get our middles involved, and we did a nice job of that later in the match. Overall, it was a great first win, and we look forward to this weekend.”

The Hawks travel to Beatrice this weekend to compete in the Southeast Community College tournament. On Friday, they will face Cloud County Community College at 10 a.m. and Colby Community College at 2 p.m. On Saturday, the Hawks square off against Williston State College at 9 a.m. and Highland Community College at 1 p.m.
