Women's soccer team opens 2017 season with 2-0 win

NORFOLK, NE – The Northeast Community College women’s soccer team kicked of the season with a 2-0 victory over Barton County Community College (KS) at Veterans Memorial Field here on Tuesday.

Valentina Haboush was assisted by Erika Kumm in scoring Northeast’s first goal, while Ellie Gess picked up the second goal for Northeast.

The Hawks struggled early in a scoreless first half, but came back strong in the second, according to Coach Chad Miller.

"We were very inconsistent the first half. We were creating our own turnovers,” Miller said. “Our girls came out and played a fantastic (second) half. We were excited about this group from the beginning, and in the second half they showed us why we should be excited."

Northeast goalie Alexis Wemhoff had four saves. The Hawks outshot the Cougars on goal, 13-4.

Northeast travels to Hutchinson, KS, this Friday for its next match to play Hutchinson Community College in a 5 p.m. match
