Northeast criminal justice instructors take active role in national organization

KANSAS CITY, MO - Two Northeast Community College instructors gave presentations, while one of them transitioned to a new leadership position at a national criminal justice conference here recently. Matt McCarthy, criminal justice director/instructor, and Colleen Barnes, criminal justice and sociology instructor, and attended the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) annual conference.

McCarthy and Barnes co-presented on the topics of creative commons, open educational resources for criminal justice and resources for classroom use.

Barnes also presented with other criminal justice faculty members from several other Nebraska community colleges on cooperative education among their institutions.

McCarthy now begins a two-year term as immediate past chair of the community college section of ACJS. McCarthy, who served as chair of the community college section for the past two years, now transitions to a new post, where he is responsible for conducting new officer elections and serving in an advisory role to the new chair.

“My role now is to assist the incoming officers with the transition to new leadership and act as a mentor,” he said.  “I am also responsible for recruiting and running elections for the next two years to bring more members into leadership roles. I will continue to present on timely issues affecting criminal justice and community college at the conference every year as well as act as a moderator of roundtable discussions.”

Founded in 1963, ACJS is an international association that promotes criminal justice education, research and policy analysis within the criminal justice discipline for educators and practitioners. ACJS has approximately 2,800 members, including scholars, professionals and students who represent every state in the United States, a number of countries and nearly every higher education institution with a criminal justice or criminology program.
