Northeast to host Disability Services Information Night

NORFOLK - Northeast Community College will host an informational meeting later this month for those interested in disability services. Disability Services Information Night will be held Tuesday, May 23, at 6 p.m. in the College Welcome Center, Room 1108, on the Norfolk campus.

This event will inform incoming students and their families of the services offered by the Disability Services staff.

Mary Balaski, director of Disability Services, said incoming students diagnosed with a disability or those who believe they might have a disability, would benefit from learning more about Disability Services.  Parents of those with a disability and students who have benefited from a special education program or served under a 504 plan are encouraged to attend.

During the meeting, Balaski will explain eligibility and documentation requirements, how to receive accommodations and assistive technology supports for specific disabilities. She will explain the importance of communicating needs to faculty and staff, housing/residential life, support services and community resources. Current Northeast students will also be sharing their experiences with utilizing accommodations.

Before the meeting begins, from 5:30-6 p.m., representatives from the Assistive Technology Partnership Program of Nebraska will demonstrate various devices and software to aid students with studying and accessing education material.  Northeast's financial aid office will remain open until 6:00 p.m. to meet with students and parents.

Balaski said a disability is defined as a physical, mental or learning condition that affects major life activities. Major life activities that can be affected and influence access to educational programs may include seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning and mobility.

To register, contact Northeast Community College at (800) 348-9033 or (402) 844-7700.  Those interested can also email Connie Meyer, Disability Services advisor, at conniem@northeast.edu, or Heather Gates, adaptive technology support specialist, at heatherg@northeast.edu, with the participant’s name, contact information and the number of people planning to attend.
